A Beautiful Home Birth (Born before arrival)

There is very little I need to say to introduce this story as the mother’s own words are so perfect. This couple had undertaken a private hypnobirthing course a few months before baby’s expected arrival, and as such had plenty of time to prepare physically and mentally for the night when he came into the world so calmly and swiftly, just the way they had imagined it.

“My beautiful baby was born in his home. It was during the night and his dad and his sister were in the next room. My doula was with me and supported me unwaveringly while I birthed him. The midwives arrived sometime after he was born, not by plan but by circumstance. I am so thankful for this circumstance.

In the many months before his birth, I read books on birth, spent time with my doula, attended the midwife appointments, completed a hypnobirthing course in my home, and had many conversations with other mums. I steadily grew in knowledge and confidence that my body would know how to birth my baby, and that trusting my body was the biggest gift I could give my baby as I brought him into the world.

On the days preceding his birth my body was slowly building towards the night he was born. When it came to it, his birth was swift. During my labour, I didn’t consciously use hypnobirthing and the other preparation that I did. However, I do know for sure that it was all of this preparation that enabled his swift, calm and beautiful birth.

There are many examples to tell that speak of this and I will share just two. Firstly, navy blue was the colour I had visualised when doing my hypnobirthing practice. It only dawned on me four weeks after his birth that the room I ‘chose’ (not a conscious choice) to birth him in had dark blue paint. Was it my subconscious at work seeking my calm and safe colour? I believe so.

“I found myself leaning over a sink and turning the faucet on full and then turning it off abruptly as the surge subsided…”

Secondly, my active labour progressed swiftly and during my all-encompassing surges, I found myself leaning over a sink and turning the faucet on full and then turning it off abruptly as the surge subsided. Then back to the sink as the next surge began. I didn’t think ‘why’ I just followed my instincts and ‘did’. Interestingly, my visualisations during my hypnobirthing practice included rain falling. I didn’t notice the connection until it was suggested to me weeks later. I wondered why I had turned to water and to this action of water gushing from the tap – perhaps my mind was seeking familiarity and reassurance that had developed from my hypnobirthing practice? I believe so.

My beautiful baby was born swiftly, without fuss or intervention. He knew how to be born! I felt him turning inside me, I felt his head coming out, I felt my body bearing down as he descended. I never ‘pushed’. My body and my baby birthed together! The sensations of birthing him were all-encompassing, deeply powerful and not easy but I did not fear them. I believe this was due to my acquired knowledge, my hypnobirthing practise with my hypnobirthing teacher and with my husband; and to the presence of my doula who was strong, calm and deeply present. It was this deep presence that allowed me ‘let go’ and allow my body to work and to birth my baby. It was her knowledge and understanding before his birth that allowed me to trust in my decision making and instincts, and in my choices and beliefs about my pregnancy and the birth of my baby.

I turn to my hypnobirthing practices now as I notice tension in my body or fear rising within me. I have connected with the practice beyond the birthing experience and I am so thankful.

And so, to my doula, my hypnobirthing teacher, my husband, my daughter and to my son — thank you for awakening me to the power and strength within me to birth naturally and instinctively.

I am forever thankful.”

Knowledge is power. With practice comes confidence.

Behold, the heady combination of power and confidence that makes visualisations become reality.

I am truly privileged to be a part of this story and I am very grateful to have been given permission to share with others so that they too can believe in the power they have within them.
